Climate Change is Happening, Blame Our Habit of Exploitation

In the race towards technological advancements and modernization, we have fallen behind in caring for our planet.

We are depleting the earth’s precious natural resources faster than scientists predicted, all because of our desire for extravagant habits and life.

Whenever we buy a gadget or a precious gem, we don’t even bother to find out or care about how it was extracted from a mine deposited somewhere below the life-filled forest in Africa or somewhere else, disrupting the delicate balance of nature.

Well, I guess the time to reap the fruit of our careless exploitation has begun.

According to the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change released on August 9th, the happening climate change is mainly because of the human exploitation of natural resources since the last century.

Some of the changes that are already set in motion, like the rising sea levels are now irreversible at any point in time for over hundreds of thousands of years.

The effects of climate change are wreaking havoc in every region of the world, scientists stated.

Melting of the Greenland ice sheets, California fires, Siberia fires, Bushfires in Australia, the Arctic melting, powerful hurricanes, Amazon forest fire, Europe’s flash floods.

According to the report published by the World Weather Attribution, scientists stated that the heavy rains between the 12th – 15th of July that devastated Europe were a result of human-propelled climate change.

And it has only increased the possibility of such heavy downpours 1.2 to 9 times more likely to happen in western Europe.

The downpour will be 3-19 percent heavier. In a single day, some parts of Germany witnessed 93 millimeters of rain while some parts of Belgium saw 106 millimeters of rain, swelling Germany’s Ahr and Erft rivers, and Belgium’s Meuse river destroying river measurement stations and killing more than 200 people.

Such intense floods of these rivers hadn’t happened in over 500 years.

“That intense rainfall might occur once every 400 years under current climate conditions, but those odds are likely to increase as the world continues to warm,” said coauthor Maarten van Aalst in a report.

The IPCC report on climate change stated that the global temperature is expected to cross 1.5°C or more of warming temperature by the next decade if immediate, rapid, and large-scale actions aren’t taking to curb Co₂ and greenhouse gas emissions.

“This report is a reality check,” said IPCC Working Group 1 co-chair Valérie Masson-Dehmotte.

The responsibility to save our planet isn’t just in the hands of the governments but is the duty of you and me.
