Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has reintroduced the fan-favorite Grief mode in its Season 4 update launched on May 29, 2025. This mode, absent since Black Ops 2, offers a unique 4v4 PvEvP (Player vs. Environment vs. Player) experience within the Zombies game mode.
What is Grief Mode in Call of Duty?
In Grief mode, two teams of four players each – Team S.A.M. and Team Richtofen – compete to outlast waves of zombies. Direct combat between teams is disabled; instead, players employ indirect methods to hinder their opponents’ survival efforts. The match continues until one team is entirely eliminated, with respawn rounds occurring every three rounds to revive fallen teammates.
Grief Arenas in Call of Duty
Grief mode is set within specific sections of existing Zombies maps, known as Grief Arenas. Each map features one or more arenas equipped with essential utilities like Der Wunderfizz machines, Pack-a-Punch, Mystery Boxes, and GobbleGum machines. Notably, certain GobbleGums are restricted in this mode to maintain balance.

Indirect PvP Mechanics
Players can impede the opposing team through various non-lethal means:
Slowing Opponents: Shooting or meleeing enemy players causes temporary slowdowns.
Body Blocking: Positioning oneself to obstruct narrow pathways can trap or delay opponents.
These tactics require strategic positioning and timing to effectively disrupt the other team’s progress without direct confrontation.
Capture Zones and Grief Debuffs
A new feature in the Grief mode of Call of Duty is the introduction of Capture Zones. These are specific areas where teams must complete objectives, such as achieving a certain number of kills or performing specific types of eliminations. Successfully capturing a zone imposes a random debuff on the opposing team, which can include:
Weapon Nerf: Reduced damage output.
Ammo Drain: Gradual depletion of ammunition, even for stowed weapons.
Zombie Ambush: An elite zombie targets only the affected team.
Weapon Carousel: Random weapon swaps at intervals.
Frozen: Significantly reduced movement speed.
These debuffs add a layer of strategy, as teams must decide when and how to contest Capture Zones to avoid detrimental effects.
Additional Notes on Call of Duty
No Wonder Weapons: To ensure fair play, Wonder Weapons are disabled in Grief mode.
Easter Eggs Disabled: Map-specific Easter eggs are not active in this mode.
Permanent Addition: Grief mode is a permanent feature in Black Ops 6, not limited to a seasonal event.
