Winter Storm: The US Braced For the Tornado Threat…

As 2022 ended with the deadly bone-chilling blizzard that killed more than 60 people the United States braced for the first winter storm of 2023 that blanketed the land with snow and sleet, threatening the country with tornado alerts according to reports by Reuters.

This first winter storm system of 2023 covered the cities with a frosty blend of freezing rain, snow, and sleet, keeping large swathes of the south on red alert for tornado and flood threats.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota regions witnessed intense snowfall of 1 to 3 inches per hour.

Harsh-blowing snow gusts accomplished with snow fog, mist, and freezing rain made traveling a nightmare in some areas.

As severe sleet and heavy snow swept through the regions, winter weather advisors and ice storm warning systems were deployed in and around St. Paul in Minnesota and Minneapolis.

The weather service stated that this winter storm originated from a low-pressure system brewing over Iowa.

This winter storm that brought heavy snow showers, hail, severe thunderstorms, and tornadoes to the Gulf Coast, lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee, and the Southern Appalachians was expected to reach as far as New England.

Severe thunderstorms and Tornado warnings were issued in most of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Georgia.

“It’s all part of the same system. Heavy snowfall is occurring on the west to the northern side of the storm. And then the rainfall and severe weather are across the south said Allison Santorelli,” the meteorologist at NWS.

More than 200 flights were canceled at the Minneapolis – St Paul airport. And up to 21,000 plus homes were blacked out due to the power cuts in Northern California.
