WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging platform, is preparing to roll out a highly requested feature for Android users: “the ability to scan documents directly within the app”.
Already available for iOS users, this functionality is currently in development for Android, according to reputable feature tracker “WABetaInfo“. This upcoming feature could drastically streamline the way users share official paperwork, IDs, contracts, and other documents via WhatsApp.
Scan Documents on Android: What to Expect
With the WhatsApp beta for Android version “2.25.18.29”, WABetaInfo discovered the inclusion of a new “Scan Document” option. Though the feature is still in development and not yet accessible to beta testers, its presence in the latest beta code strongly suggests that Android users will soon get access.
Once rolled out, Android users will find this option alongside “Browse documents” and “Choose from gallery” in the “Documents attachment menu”. Tapping the “Scan Document” button will launch the smartphone camera, enabling users to scan paper documents within the app.
Much like its iOS counterpart, the document scanner is expected to support “automatic edge detection”, “auto-capture”, and “manual controls” for perfect alignment. Once scanned, WhatsApp will compile the images into a clean “PDF format”, ready to be shared with other users or saved to your device.

AI-Powered Features Also in the Works
This document scanning tool isn’t the only innovation coming to WhatsApp for Android. Meta is also experimenting with “AI-powered message summarisation” via its “Private Processing system”. With this feature, users can receive a quick summary of lengthy message threads, especially in group chats.
If you’re using WhatsApp beta for Android “version 2.25.18.18 or later”, you might notice a new “Summarise with Meta AI” button inside chats that have an unspecified number of unread messages.
This feature ensures “user privacy” by leveraging on-device processing through Meta’s secure architecture. However, the summary prompt won’t appear in chats where “Advanced Chat Protection” is enabled.
Why This Feature Matters for Android Users
Currently, Android users rely on third-party apps or tools like “Google Drive’s Scan feature” to digitize physical documents. The arrival of an “integrated scanner in WhatsApp” eliminates the need for switching between apps, enabling quick sharing in real time.
For professionals, students, and remote workers, this update could make WhatsApp a “one-stop communication and productivity hub”. It aligns with Meta’s broader vision to infuse AI and convenience into its suite of apps without compromising user privacy.
Release Timeline and Availability
Though no official launch date has been confirmed, WhatsApp’s history of rolling out features from beta to stable versions suggests that the “document scanner” could arrive in the coming months. The feature will first be made available to “beta testers”, followed by a wider release on the “stable version of WhatsApp for Android”.
Until then, Android users can continue using alternatives like “Google Drive” or “Microsoft Lens” to scan documents. But with WhatsApp aiming to become an all-in-one platform, the wait might be worth it.
“Stay tuned for updates as WhatsApp continues to evolve from a chat app into a powerful productivity tool.”
