EA Games: Hackers Stole Game and Tool Source Code From EA

EA Games :

We are seeing a rise in cyber-attacks on big companies recently.

Resident Evil maker, Capcom endured a serious ransomware attack in November 2020.

CD Projekt Red, the maker of Cyberpunk 2077, suffered a similar ransomware attack on February 2021 and the data was sold for millions of dollars. And now the hackers have stolen the valuable data of another big video game company, Electronic Arts (EA Games).

According to the Vice report, the hackers gained access to EA Games and stole the source code of big games like FIFA21, Battlefield, Titanfall, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and many other games.

They also stole the source code and internal tools for the Frostbite engine, a powerful tool that is used for streamlined game development.

To sum it up, they stole data of around 780Gb from EA Games and are displayed for sale on various dark-web forums.

They posted the posts in various darknet forums after the EA Games’ heist that was noticed by Motherboard, a source that has access to such forums which aren’t available publicly.

EA Games later confirmed that the source data that was available on those forums was their own breached data.

“We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen,” a spokesperson of EA Games stated to Motherboard in the report.

“No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy, following the incident, we’ve already made security improvements and do not expect any impact on our games or our business,” the company added.

Source codes of any games or software could be used to alter and reverse engineer those finished products.

And the source code of gaming tools can be used to develop similar tools by those who are trying to create and sell their own tool in the market and can be used to create hacks and cheat codes for the games that were created using the same tool. The hackers shared some screenshots of the EA games hack…

“We are actively working with law enforcement officials and other experts as part of this ongoing criminal investigation,” the company added.
