Bumblebee Queens Can Breathe Underwater for Days, Scientists Discover

A surprising scientific discovery has revealed an extraordinary survival ability of the “Bumblebee”. Researchers have found that “bumblebee queens can survive underwater for several days — and may actually breathe while submerged”.

The finding challenges long-held assumptions about insect respiration and offers new insight into how these vital pollinators survive extreme environmental conditions. The discovery emerged after what scientists described as an unexpected laboratory accident — one that ultimately led to a remarkable breakthrough in understanding bumblebee biology.

The Unexpected Survival of a Submerged Bumblebee

The discovery began when a seemingly lifeless “bumblebee queen” was found after spending nearly a week underwater in a lab vial.

Ecological physiologist “Charles Darveau” from the “University of Ottawa” initially suspected the insect might simply have held its breath. But basic calculations quickly ruled that out.

A queen bumblebee with a body volume of roughly one milliliter would require around “20 milliliters of oxygen” to survive that long — far more than it could possibly store inside its body.

The conclusion? “The insect had somehow continued breathing underwater.”

How Bumblebee Queens Survive Submersion

Further investigation focused on the species “Bombus impatiens”, a common North American pollinator.

In controlled experiments, researchers deliberately submerged hibernating queens in cold water for “eight days”. During the test, they monitored:

> Oxygen consumption
> Carbon dioxide release
> Metabolic changes within the insects

The results revealed that the queens “continued releasing carbon dioxide into the water”, confirming that they were still exchanging gases — effectively breathing while submerged.

At the same time, oxygen levels in the surrounding water gradually decreased. This showed the bees were extracting oxygen directly from the water during the experiment.

A Backup Survival Strategy

Scientists also detected a rise in “lactic acid” within the bees’ bodies. This chemical buildup indicates “anaerobic metabolism”, a biological process that produces energy without relying on oxygen.

In other words, the queens were using a “dual survival strategy”:

1. Absorbing oxygen from the water when possible.
2. Switching to oxygen-independent metabolism when necessary.

This ability is particularly effective during “hibernation”, when the insects’ metabolic rates are already dramatically reduced.

Why Bumblebees Need This Skill

Bumblebee queens spend the winter months buried underground, often inside soil cavities or small burrows. These locations can easily become flooded during heavy rainfall.

Without a survival mechanism, a flooded nest could kill a hibernating queen — and with her, an entire future colony. The discovery suggests that bumblebee queens have evolved a “natural defense against temporary flooding”.

However, the exact mechanism behind underwater breathing is still unclear. Researchers suspect the bees may trap “a microscopic layer of air around their bodies”, similar to the way some aquatic insects survive underwater.

Recovery After Submersion

Even though the queens survive flooding, the process is physically demanding. After emerging from the water, they breathe at “higher-than-normal rates for several days”.

This helps remove the excess lactic acid that accumulated during anaerobic metabolism. While they recover, their bodies work overtime to restore normal energy balance.

Climate Change Could Test Their Limits

The discovery comes at a time when “climate change is increasing the frequency of intense rainfall and flooding” in many regions. Repeated flooding events could potentially push the bees’ survival mechanisms to their limits.

Because queens must survive winter to establish new colonies in spring, excessive energy loss during multiple submersions could threaten colony formation. Scientists warn that there may be a threshold beyond which the bees cannot recover.

Why Bumblebees Matter to Ecosystems

They play a critical role as “pollinators” in natural ecosystems and agriculture.

They help fertilize crops such as:
